SUMMARY The standard chi square tests of marginal homogeneity take no account of possible category ordering. We describe several strategies that make use of category order and which tend to yield more powerful tests for certain common alternatives.

A L Tests for Cross-classifications: Approximation of Attained Significance Levels

Several recent articles have outlined methodologies for exact conditional analyses of data which are summarized in an r × c matrix of counts. Depending upon the purposes of the experimenter, several types of null and alternative hypotheses are appropriate. Some of the procedures [Agresti & Wackerly, 1977; Freeman & Halton, 1951] test for independence between two variables, while others [Klotz &...

Marginal Homogeneity Model for Ordered Categories with Open Ends in Square Contingency Tables

• A marginal homogeneity model tests whether the row and column distributions of a square contingency table have the same sample margins. However, for variables with ordered categories, the marginal homogeneity model does not take into account the ordering information, leading to significant loss of power. Score-based tests have been proposed for ordinal variables. In this paper, we extend the ...

The Analysis of Ordered Categorical Data: An Overview and a Survey of Recent Developments

This article reviews methodologies used for analyzing ordered categorical (ordinal) response variables. We begin by surveying models for data with a single ordinal response variable. We also survey recently proposed strategies for modeling ordinal response variables when the data have some type of clustering or when repeated measurement occurs at various occasions for each subject, such as in l...

Visualising and modelling changes in categorical variables in longitudinal studies

BACKGROUND Graphical techniques can provide visually compelling insights into complex data patterns. In this paper we present a type of lasagne plot showing changes in categorical variables for participants measured at regular intervals over time and propose statistical models to estimate distributions of marginal and transitional probabilities. METHODS The plot uses stacked bars to show the ...
